Microsoft has ended full support for Office 2019 on Mac from today, bringing a major change for users of the software. The decision affects the Mac version only and does not apply to Office 2019 on Windows or Android devices.
Under the change, Office 2019 for Mac now runs in what Microsoft calls “Reduced Functionality Mode.” This means users can still open, view, and print documents they created earlier. However, they can no longer create new files or edit existing ones because Microsoft will no longer validate the software’s licence.
The affected applications include Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and OneNote. While these apps remain installed and accessible, their editing features are no longer available for Office 2019 users on Mac.
Microsoft said the change is the result of the product reaching the end of its support period. According to the company, there will be no new software updates, and it is no longer possible to issue new licence certificates for Office 2019 on Mac.
Users who want to continue creating and editing documents will need to upgrade to Office 2024 or subscribe to Microsoft 365, Microsoft said.
The decision has drawn criticism from some users on social media. Several comments posted on Reddit described the move as disappointing and questioned why customers who purchased the software must now upgrade to continue using its full features.
Responding to the criticism, a Microsoft spokesperson told The Sun that the company is not intentionally reducing the software’s capabilities. The spokesperson said Office 2019 has simply reached the end of its support lifecycle, leaving no way to provide further updates or new certificates.
For Mac users who still depend on Office 2019, the change means the software can now be used only for viewing and printing existing files. Those who need to edit documents in the future will have to move to a newer version of Microsoft Office or a Microsoft 365 subscription.
